My first official film review! This was one of the first classic films I saw, when I was 11 years old. Starring Bette Davis, Claude Rains, and Paul Henreid, "Now, Voyager" is about a wealthy and very unhappy spinster who goes on a cruise and ultimately falls in love with a married man. I believe this is Bette Davis' best performance of her career, apart from "All About Eve" (which I will review some other time). She plays the unhappy, ugly spinster to perfection. And even after her "makeover" (which only consists of a haircut, a little more makeup, and more fashionable attire), she still has the self-loathing that can only be deterred by a passionate and loving man. Paul Henreid plays Davis' suitor who is just as unhappy as she is; however, he hides it well. He is stuck in a miserable marriage, and no matter how hard he tries, he is unable to make his youngest daughter happy. Claude Rains plays Davis' therapist whose words of wisdom not only touches Davis' character, but the audience as well.
For those who want to start watching classic cinema, this film is a great place to start. Filled with some of the best actors during the time, "Now, Voyager" brings comedy, drama, and romance to the screen. I highly recommend this film to anyone, so please take two hours out of your day to watch Bette Davis at her best.
