The Philadelphia Story, 1940

The Philadelphia Storyis a great classic comedy starring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and James Stewart. It tells the story of Tracy Lord, a wealthy socialite, who is to be remarried to a middle class man, George Kittredge. James Stewart plays a reporter by the name of Macaulay Connor who goes undercover to get a story of the society wedding. Cary Grant stars as C.K Dexter Haven, the ex-husband of Katherine Hepburn's character, who helps Connor get a juicy story about the bride. In the middle of all this, Connor falls in love with Tracy, and Dexter falls back in love with her. And all this happens in one weekend!

This film is so funny, witty, and full of life. Stewart wins his first and only Oscar in this role - I think it's because he didn't win the year before in his unbelievable performance in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". And this was during the time that actors actually won Oscars in comedic roles. Hepburn is fabulous as Tracy Lord - confident, charming, but then she slowly let's her insecurities comes out, and she finally learns the truth about herself. And let's not forget Cary Grant! Though he is very funny and very lovable, I believe he is just there for a little bit eye candy, which I am definitely not complaining about!

This is a great start for anyone who hasn't seen a screwball comedy, so go watch this film and love every minute of it!

Ciao!
